AIA JACKSONVILLE – 2020 DESIGN AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE BARNETT BUILDING

DHA is proud to announce that we took home 2 of the 7 awards at the 2020 AIA Jacksonville Design Awards Gala, held via zoom this year.  Awards of Excellence were awarded for our work on the restoration of the Barnett Bank Building and the Farah Residence.

Constructed in 1926 as Jacksonville’s tallest building, the Barnett Bank Building has been a decades-long effort on the part of the Dasher Hurst team, starting with initial work in 2005 at our previous office.   2013 was a turning point in the effort when Steve Atkins of the Southeast Group purchased the building with plans to adaptively reuse it as a mixed use development with apartments, commercial, and higher education users.  In 2017, Dasher Hurst began design work in earnest for the building restoration and interior design, starting with Part 2 documents for historic review by the State Historic Preservation Office.  The entire building was modeled in BIM software to ensure maximum coordination between trades.  Significant features of the exterior and interior were documented and specifications developed for their preservation or rehabilitation.

Danis Construction was brought on board for construction, fully restoring including its exterior masonry, stone, windows and adding dramatic new lighting.   Chase Bank now occupies the ground level banking hall with the Jacksonville Business Journal on the second floor overlooking their space through glass storefronts.   The University of North Florida Business Incubator was constructed on levels four and five and 107 apartments were constructed on levels 8-18 including dramatic 14 foot tall penthouse units on the 18th floor.

The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it eligible for historic tax credits which help fund the renovation. Additionally, the project has been LEED Certified for by the US Green Building Council, an acknowledgment of the sustainable design and practices used throughout the restoration.

Dasher Hurst is incredibly proud of our work on this local landmark and architectural icon.  Our sincere hope is that its restoration will serve as a catalyst for future growth and redevelopment of the downtown core, a guiding principle of our practice.
