In 1953, the Independent Life Insurance Company began construction on their new corporate headquarters at the corner of Duval and Julia Streets in Jacksonville. The building, clad in a combination of limestone, glazed brick, granite, and glass, immediately became a landmark for the city with dramatic massing, a glazed executive penthouse, and iconic stainless steel signage and canopies.

Dasher Hurst, on behalf of the Augustine Development Group, was commissioned to restore this building to its former glory, while constructing 135 market rate apartments and ground level retail. The building is topped with a dramatic amenity suite including three levels of outdoor terrace, lap pool, bar, club room, and a 19th level restaurant in the historic “Sky Room.”

A combination of historic tax credits and City of Jacksonville historic preservation incentives help to financially support the project. As such, the exterior work was detailed and specified following the guidelines set forth in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Preservation.
